Dr. Sharif Osman, Director of Mogadishu University’s Center for Water and Environment, recently highlighted the escalating environmental challenges facing the Horn of Africa and their potential to threaten the livelihoods and well-being of millions in the region. He emphasized that if urgent measures are not taken, these environmental issues could have devastating long-term effects on both human populations and ecosystems.
In his statement, Dr. Osman drew attention to the alarming issues of water scarcity, deforestation, and desertification that are intensifying in the region. He noted that the effects of climate change, such as more frequent droughts and unpredictable rainfall patterns, are exacerbating the already fragile environmental situation. These environmental problems are not only endangering natural resources but also contributing to increased poverty, food insecurity, and displacement among affected communities.
Dr. Osman stressed the importance of taking immediate, coordinated action to mitigate these environmental challenges. He called for increased investment in sustainable practices, such as water conservation, reforestation, and climate-resilient agriculture, as well as stronger policies to protect the region’s natural resources. His remarks underscored the need for both local and international cooperation to address these pressing issues and ensure a more sustainable future for the Horn of Africa.
