The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at the University of Muqdisho recently organized an awareness seminar titled “Pollution of the Shabelle River and the Cultural Practices of Dumping Waste into Water Bodies.” This event aimed to raise awareness about the environmental impact of pollution on the Shabelle River, one of Somalia’s most vital water sources, and the broader effects of waste disposal practices in water bodies and surrounding areas.
Dr. Shariif Cusman, an expert in environmental sciences, led the seminar, providing valuable insights into the causes and consequences of pollution in the region. His presentation focused on how improper waste disposal practices, especially the dumping of garbage into rivers and wetlands, are threatening the health of local ecosystems and communities.
Dr. Cusman emphasized the importance of responsible waste management and the role of local communities in preserving the natural resources. The seminar served as an essential platform for educating both students and local residents about the urgent need for sustainable practices in handling waste and protecting Somalia’s vital water resources.
By addressing the cultural norms surrounding waste disposal, the seminar highlighted the need for a shift in community behaviors to ensure the long-term health of the Shabelle River and other water bodies. The event was a significant step in raising environmental awareness and fostering a more sustainable approach to water management and waste disposal in Somalia.
